The CMS experiment at CERN studies the collisions produced by the LHC.
It represents one of the most challenging data science problem ever faced: 2MB of data from about 100 million electronic channels are gathered at 40 MHz (corresponding to a throughput larger than the current internet traffic) and then processed to seek for extremely rare and unknown events.
On December 3rd, we guided the Dean of University of Padova, prof. Rizzuto and his deputy, prof. Dalla Fontana, to the CMS experiment site. They had also the chance to meet the CERN Director General Fabiola Gianotti.
Several courses of Physics of Data profit from the collaboration of CERN scientists coming to Padova to teach our students how to tackle challenges like the one posed by CMS!
